Critical illness cover pays you a tax-free lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a critical illness during the term of the policy. A serious illness can happen suddenly and without warning. This cover can help protect you and your loved ones from financial stress, especially if the main earner can’t work because of their illness.
Critical illness cover typically includes serious illnesses like heart attacks, cancers, strokes, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, organ transplants and blindness/deafness.
Pre-existing conditions, congenital/hereditary illnesses (e.g. birth-related or inherited), terminal illnesses and illnesses diagnosed within 14 days of the policy start date are often excluded, so it’s important that you carefully review your policy documents before taking out a policy.
Most critical illness policies end after a successful claim is made - meaning the cover stops once you’ve received the lump sum. However, some insurers let you add extra options that allow the policy to continue after a payout, offering further protection.
When you take out a policy, you choose how much cover you need and how long it will last - this is called the term. If you are diagnosed with a serious illness that meets the insurer's criteria and you live beyond the required survival period, the policy will pay out a one-time, lump sum payment.
Some policies pay out different amounts depending on how serious the condition is. For example, if you are diagnosed with a less serious illness you might receive 25% of your cover amount, while you could receive an 100% payout if your condition is more severe.
If you ever need to make a claim, LifeSearch’s dedicated Claims team will support you throughout the process to help make sure you receive your payout.
Terminal illness cover pays out if you are diagnosed with an illness that doctors expect will end your life within 12 months. It pays out earlier than life insurance, which only pays out after you’ve passed away.
Critical illness cover is different. It pays out if you're diagnosed with a serious illness (like cancer, a heart attack or a stroke) that isn’t necessarily life-threatening right away but could still have a big impact on your life and ability to work.
