COVID-19 life protection FAQs

Yes you can.

Over the past year or so, insurers have changed or adapted some of their questions; but also have a better understanding of the impact of COVID-19, so it usually won’t affect your ability to take out a new policy. As always, it’s important to answer all questions accurately and truthfully.

Yes. Assuming (and it’s very unlikely) that there’s a COVID-19 exclusion in any new policy you take out, you’ll be covered - and your Life Insurance will pay out if you pass away from COVID-19.

It’s important to ensure you get the right advice to ensure you’re covered properly. Speak to us and we’ll guide you through the process and answer any queries you may have.

Not directly, because COVID-19 isn’t recognised as a Critical Illness.

However, if you contracted COVID-19 and this was to develop into another serious condition that’s covered in your Critical Illness policy, then you would receive a payout as normal.

Yes, but only according with the usual terms and conditions in an Income Protection policy. Usually there’s a deferral period and if the illness was to be longer than that, then you would need to meet the definition of not being able to work according to approved medical advice. This is as per normal Income Protection policy t&cs.

This really depends on each insurers stance at this particular point in time.

Many insurers offer cover that includes COVID-19, but usually with a set number of terms and conditions. Some will only offer Income Protection with a COVID-19 exclusion. Talk to us for advice and the latest guidance.

No. Currently, having had or not had a vaccine will not be a factor in any new application, and this will not change the medical questions asked.

If you’ve taken life insurance out in the past, the policy will still pay out. For new policies taken out during the COVID-19 pandemic, you should still get a payout – as long as there’s been no specific COVID-19 exclusions stated in your application, which at the moment isn’t a common exclusion for Life Insurance policies.

Yes.

Currently, nothing has changed presently during the course of an application and you’ll be asked all the relevant questions to ensure you’re covered appropriately. If you’re experiencing Long-COVID then it’s advisable to disclose this when asked about specific medical questions, and your adviser will be able to help identify the best insurer options for you and answer any specific questions that may arise.

If you’d had COVID-19 and answer yes, the insurer may postpone the application for a month - until you’ve recovered.

If you have Long-COVID, which you should disclose during your application, then there may be certain exclusions dependent on the chosen insurer or differing deferral periods.

Many insurers offer additional benefits that could prove very helpful, including medical advice and Virtual GP services – especially helpful if you can’t get in front of your local GP or specialist.

To pause your policy, it depends on each insurer and who you’re with. For now, you should remain making regular payments to ensure your policy is still in force.
